Documentary For the second semester of our first year we had to make short radio and tv documentaries. Working in groups of 2-5, we came up with feature story ideas in the Vancouver area.
City for a Canvas - TV Documentary, April 2007
The life of Milan Basic is as colourful as his artwork gracing the streets of Vancouver. A rebellious graffiti writer in his youth, Basic has mad the transition from punk to parent, street tyrant to spray-can artist over the past two decades-- and has plenty to show for it.
I was responsible for interviewed Basic and editing the feature and I shot half the footage.
A 4.5 minute radio documentary on Vancouver punk band The Rebel Spell. This piece provides an intimate look into the unexpected goals and philosophy of a politically-active group of young musicians.
Produced with Joanne Abshire, narrated by yours truly.
Radio News Lab As part of the rigourous Journalism Program at BCIT we go through a Radio News Lab Class. The instructors run the class like a mock news station: we take turns as beat reporters, deskers and sportscasters to polish our skills for the 'real' world. Deskers must research and write a pair of 3 minute casts in 90 minutes or less and broadcast them at their assigned time. Beat reporters have to interview and write as many stories as possible in 3 hours.
Newswriting As part of our newswriting class, we're given raw information on an event for TV or radio writing (ie. press releases, raw audio, etc). We usually have a maximum of an hour to write each story, but generally finish in half an hour or less.
